James Rondeau is Curator and Frances and Thomas Dittmer Chair, Department of Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Rondeau received a graduate degree in art history from Williams College, and, after serving as Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Connecticut, he joined the Art Institute’s modern and contemporary department in 1998. Rondeau assumed his current position as the head of the Department of Contemporary Art at the museum in 2004.

In 2001, Mr. Rondeau served as Commissioner and Co-Curator of the United States Pavilion, 49th Venice Biennale (with co-curator Olga Viso) presenting new work by artist Robert Gober. At the Art Institute, he has organized over twenty solo exhibitions featuring such artists as Olafur Eliasson, Thomas Hirschhorn, Steve McQueen, Marlene Dumas, Margherita Manzelli, and Anri Sala. Recent publications include essays on artists Charles LeDray, Roni Horn, Iñigo-Manglano Ovalle, Gaylen Gerber, Michael Asher, and Maureen Gallace.
